KABUL, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — About 150 foreign nationals have been lodged in prisons in Afghanistan, an official of the country’s prison administration reported on Sunday.
“Currently, about 150 foreigners are held in Afghanistan’s jails for various crimes, including deception and forgery. They are from various countries, including neighboring ones,” said Mawlawi Mohammad Yusuf Mustari, acting head of the administration.
Without revealing the nationalities of the foreign detainees, Mustari said, “At the moment, 8,000-9,000 Afghan citizens are imprisoned in jails abroad. Most of them are held in Iran.”
According to the official, Afghan nationals are in jails in countries including Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
About 11,000 people, including 1,000 women, are currently held in prisons in Afghanistan, Mustari said. ■
